Locke, Midori, Gerald, Owca, and See Lin meet in Dusty's Tavern. They begin working for Wyatt, who sends them on a variety of local missions. During this time, See Lin stealthily murders Owca, and his replacement, Chad Barbo. The other party members grow suspicious of him, and he flees. Chad's death and the party's violent tendencies lead Midori to start worshiping Voraci, the goddess of death.
The party, along with their newest member, Captain Barbo, investigate Major Tavington, a Drekissian military officer who is purposely sending nobles to their deaths so he can inherit their land. While investigating an ancient tomb, they accidentally release the vampire Cassandra. Upon learning that Tavington has ordered an expedition of the Talens, the party travel there themselves. They learn he is searching for the Crown of Domination, and manage to find it before his troops do.
The crown requires a Philosopher's Stone to be used to its full potential. They travel to Fortune, where one is rumored to be located. They find Fortune under the control of a strange cult, led by the mysterious (and absent) Count Vicious. After one failed attempt, they retrieve the stone. They bring it to Copperhill, where they plan to study it.
Midori, distressed by her promise to kill her party, throws a dagger at the stone, and is killed by the resulting explosion. Locke, distressed by Midori's death, throws the crown at the stone, and is killed by the resulting explosion.
Joris, the wizard-mayor of Copperhill, summons the powerful wizard Malakai to deal with the situation. He then evacuates the population to Stromheim, knowing that Count Vicious is coming. Malakai, the remaining party members, and the bard Pearl flee to Stromheim, where they teleport to Bon’ Theris. Malakai gives the party several gifts, but keeps the crown for himself.
The party return to Fen Den, where they learn that Colonel Tavington is coming after them to avenge his son. The party, assisted by Kumo, successfully ambush and kill him.
The party returns to Stromheim to free Joris, who was imprisoned by the Queen. After returning a stolen necklace, the Queen frees Joris and sends the party on a quest to investigate the Demons. After limited progress, Kumo kills Captain Barbo's protegé, Little Bobby. In the resulting duel, Captain Barbo kills Kumo.
